A Tropical Rain Forest Event

Hello,

I’m letting all of the tribes know about a regional event coming up soon – Rebirth. Burning Man, but rather than radical desert survival – radical tropical rain forest survival. Details of the event can be found here:

http://www.kapilina.org/bigisland/rebirth2006.html

Hawaii… Fire spinning capital of the world… Big Island… Hot tub ponds heated by thermal vents… Black Sand Beaches… LAVA… REAL LAVA! And a Burning Man regional event.

I’ve tried to figure out how to reduce costs as much as possible for everyone coming over from the mainland (if you can think of anyother suggestions please post):

Rideshare thread from the airport to puna here:
http://kapilina.tribe.net/thread/5438fe28-b674-4c10-9bed-3334aae6f4e3

Cheap Airfare From Mainland:

Again if you know cheaper means please repost. See you all there!

Two more days till we take off for the Playa:) YEAH!!!!!

Nym and my plan are to do the rest of our playa shopping over the next two days..
I fortunately have thurs and friday off so I will probably do most of the last minute shopping. Nym has taken friday off and we will spend the day packing and getting anything forgotten. We hope to leave for Santa Cruz friday night and and go pick up Ordaos(Nym's brother). We will stay the night in Santa Cruz and leave Saturday as early as we can once we are all packed up. That should get us to the Playa sometime saturday afternoon depending on when we leave.

Can't wait to see you all on the Playa.

Playa dust, nothing better in the World!! :)

Karol from our camp got arrested for taking part in the RoadWar event in San Antonio ( http://www.roadwarusa.com/roadwar151/index.htm ).

"Eleven "Mad Max" fans of were arrested after alarming motorists as they made their way to a movie marathon in a theatrical convoy in which they surrounded a tanker truck armed with fake machine guns.

As the group was headed to San Antonio from nearby Boerne Saturday morning, police received several calls from motorists who reported a "militia" surrounding a tanker truck, a police report states.

Police charged nine people with obstruction of a highway and two others with possession of prohibited knives in addition to obstruction of a highway."

Hi Nym, Hi all,
Look in photos and find first draft of kiosk. Rope lights should have a better structure and perspective to hang from. What do you think of its size? . Still mulling over posts and how to anchor. It’s easier if posts are not longer than 8’ and 7’ seems to be the needed height above desert floor. Any comments
Directional post with signs project. Approximately how many signs?

Is this the right place to post?

Help us save Curtis ... Please!

Hi there. I am not sure if you know Curtis Coleman ... he's a friend of ours in the Burning Man community.

Friends of Curtis is a community effort to support singer/songwriter Curtis Coleman as he battles squamous cell carcinoma, an aggressive cancer attacking his neck and throat. Last year, Curtis’ musical performances helped tens of thousands of children to learn about safety and expressing their own voices. Now, he may lose his own voice forever. Together we can help prevent that.

I have a huge favor to ask of you. We're putting together a FUNdraiser for Curtis, on March 5 at SOMArts in San Francisco. As part of this we are having a silent auction to let people take home some cool items while leaving some more of their cash behind LOL.

I think burning man portraits are an awesome choice for an auction item. It is non-commercial -- we're giving all money directly to Curtis. You would get a display sheet with your name/web site on it and if you like, the right to display your business cards right next to your art.

If you think you can participate, please let me know and we'll figure out logistics. I really appreciate it.

You can read about Curtis at http://www.friendsofcurtis.com

Thanks in advance!

Burning Man 2005

Here is my plans for our camp at Black Rock City for next year. This year was excellent, and I want to expand on what we accomplished.

Again, I am working so that our camp, ROAM will be a key part of THE BRANE village. The tribe for the village is http://thebrane.tribe.net/ if you aren't already connected.

I intend to help the village in the following ways:

* Display a map with pushpins to allow people to indicate where in the village they are.
(how many times did you get asked where A. Jones Burner was?)

* Display a dry erase board with four days listed so people can list their events within the village.

My secondary goal for Burning Man as a whole is a project called "Cyborg Art Review". Using GPSes and digital cameras, I aim to collect photographs and GPS tracklogs from other burners, and use them to create a gallery of mapped photos. Using the eyes and cameras of participants, we'll display the best and brightest artwork from around the playa.

Survivability of our camp is a key part to the success of the above two projects, and any other projects our camp wants to embrace. Here are some issues of self-reliance that I think we should talk about:

* Shelter - Rich did a great job with this year, but we expect to be larger this year. How should we change?

* Tables - For the kitchen, workspace, and our camp's computer.

* Kitchen - Stove, crates, wash basins

* Camp Water - A big water jug for everyone to use. It seemed like we went this way anyways, and we had lots of extra water anyways.

* Grey Water - Rich and Jay are designing new ways to tackle this problem. I'm game to build a pool or two for this purpose though.

So lets sound off! I know it's early, but I'm getting excited about these things, and I think we can make great things happen.
